Sri Lanka

Among the countries in South Asian region, Sri Lanka takes pride of having a good health care system which is free of charge. In relation to MDG performance, Sri Lanka ranks as an early achiever in under 5 mortality, infant mortality, TB prevalence, TB death rate and urban water and urban and rural sanitation.

Sri Lanka does not have any significant food shortages as the country still possesses a strong agriculture sector. The government has a system to support low income families with a monthly grant. This initiative is supported by the non governmental sector to ensure that these families can meet their very basic needs including food security.

However, it has been established that with all these extensive health care services and significant achievements in the health sector, nearly one third of children and one quarter of women suffer from malnutrition. This alarming factor can not be ignored as it violates not only the child’s right to survival but also their overall growth and development.

Statistics

• Nearly one out of five children is born with low birth weight. According to UNICEF around 29% of fewer than 5 children are reported to be underweight.
• Wasting (acute malnutrition) among under 5 children stand at 14%.1
• 58% of infants between 6-11 months and 38% of children between 12-23 months are anemic.
