Good governance is a new concept among development organisations. Organisations working on governance are seldom found to lack child-focused perspective. Country budgets are also not analysed from children’s perspectives. Organisations working for children’s rights seldom have the capacity to effectively address governance issues and to link macro-micro issues from a rights perspective. Children do not participate in decision making process that affects their lives due to resistance from adults and social power structures. Save the Children Sweden Denmark works to see that children are increasingly influencing both the national and local governance in decisions affecting their lives and taking active role in creating accountability of duty bearers in realising child rights.
The good governance (GG) unit works to build up capacity of NGO’s on internal governance as sometimes credibility or legitimacy of NGO governance is in question, especially when they perform right based activities. It also works on national level policy issues especially NPA, PRSP and ADP. It works to build capacity of partner organisations through constructive engagement with different ministries and departments of government.
Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR is another area of involvement for the GG unit which at present has three projects. One project includes six Danish companies to develop a socially responsible approach in them. The other one is a mapping of corporate houses to see the involvement of children’s issues in their CSR works. Another project is regarding child labour with a Swedish company called IKEA.
