Friends in Village Development in Bangladesh FIVDB
FIVDB is one of Save the Children Sweden Denmark & UK’s partners in education working in under-served and un-served geographical areas. FIVDB has been working in the non-formal education sector for many years and has built up a good rapport with the government education system in Sylhet. The organisation is well-known for its quality Child Education Project (CEP), using active learning methods in a child-friendly teaching-learning environment and training teachers to become better teachers using the government curriculum in a more creative and cost-effective way. Save the Children Sweden Denmark and SCUK has been in partnership with FIVDB for the last 3 years for Community Based Child Education Monitoring System(CEMIS) project.
Major activities:
• Introduce Community Based Education Related Data Management
• Identify the gaps in terms of access to education
• Strengthening school management committee
• Local level school planning
• Increase parents involvement with school
Working area: Sylhet district.
Coverage: FIVDB is covering a total of 5100 students through CEMIS project. Male female ratio is almost fifty - fifty.
Other initiatives:
Shishur Khamatayan Project (Empowerment of Children Project)
This project is a joint collaboration between all the Save the Children alliance members present in Bangladesh. The Shishur Khamatayan project aims to support ethnic minority children to create mother tongue based learning opportunities through pre-school initiatives and also supporting the plain land, hard to reach children to improve access to quality education and promote the participation of children in decisions that affect them within the classroom, school, family and wider society.
Technical Partnership with Gono Shahajjo Sangstha (GSS)
As part of partners’ capacity building on education activities Save the Children Sweden Denmark established a technical partnership with GSS which is a renowned education focused national organisation. GSS is supporting on basic training on education as well as support to the ongoing education activities in the areas of classroom management, establishing proper supervision and monitoring mechanism, learners’ performance assessment, material development, on job training of staffs, subject based training facilitation, etc.
Partnership with Campaign with Popular Education (CAMPE)
CAMPE is a strong networking body of education based organisation in Bangladesh. It is supporting Save the Children Sweden Denmark to address education setting based physical and humiliating punishment issues to respective government authorities, relevant stakeholders including NGO platform and civil society platforms as well as in the media.
Strategic partnership and networking
Save the Children Sweden Denmark has issue based strategic partnership with some key education based networks in Bangladesh like Inclusive Education Core Group (IE Core Group), Save the Children Alliance Working Group on Education (AWGE), Early childhood Development (ECD) network, etc.
Advocacy initiatives to influence PEDP II
Save the Children Sweden Denmark is participating in the Local Education Consultative Group which is a major influential forum mainly consisting of bilateral and multilateral organisations in Bangladesh to influence the government. Save the Children Sweden Denmark is raising issues through this forum to influence donors and the government to implement the mandates of government’s Primary Education Development Programme Phase II (PEDP II)
