Child Brigade

CB is the child led organization facilitated by Save the Children Sweden Denmark with an objective of “Be together and organized for their upliftment.” The vision of CB is: All the girls and the boys with different socio-economic background should be treated equally at all levels of the society. With this vision the goal of CB is to provide street and working children’s education, health, protection, entertainment and child friendly job and work environment established.

The main objectives include:

•    Help the process of building a network among street and working children
•    Raise children’s voices to claim their rights 
•    Make effort to ensure the minimum rights to protect the working and street children
•    Complement the efforts of other organizations aiming for development of the children.
•    Develop a working model where children participate in and lead their development process. 

Formation of Child Brigade:

Child Brigade formed in 1994 by a group of working children. The initiatives to form the group were taken by the children. In the beginning there were no girls as members because the boys did not allow the girls to join in the beginning.

Membership:

The children who are working and living on the street and slums can be members of Child Brigade.

Boys and girls both can be member of Child Brigade.

Other children, than working and street children, can work with children as volunteer.

Management and organ gram of the group:

General member group- all children who are working or living on the street can be general member of CB;

Shadow group- this group is the primary step to promote core group. Shadow group members are selected by the general member group;

Core group-This group is responsible to implement the regular activities of the organization. CB has two adult staff to facilitate the organisation and support children on protection and legal issues. Child Brigade has no legal id.

Major Activities

•    Organize Babloo sessions (education based on child friendly material)
•    Admit children in mainstream and NGO school  
•    Communication with the NGO who are providing health and legal service
•    Providing health and legal service
•    Publish newspaper
•    Participate in different child related meetings, workshops, consultation and trainings
•    Organise meetings with parents
•    Sharing sessions with journalists and lawyers
•    Produce and perform theatre
•    Participate in  theatre festival
•    Facilitate children sessions 
•    Weekly and monthly meetings 
•    Support to develop youth organisations
•    Procure playing materials ,organize games
•    Distribution of clothes 
•    Advocacy & working children movement
•    Children and emergency

Working area: Children Brigade is working in 7 slums in Dhaka city. The areas are: Bishow Road, Eskaton, Kamlapur Railway Station, South Kamlapur, Mirpur (Janata housing) , Korail and Adabor in Dhaka city.  

Coverage: Child Brigade is working in 7 slum areas in Dhaka city. Altogether 500 children are directly involved with Child Brigade.

Ichchey Media Group 

Ichchey is a platform for the children to raise the voices of children through the different media initiatives by the children. This platform runs by the children who do not have any access to information and media. Most of the children come from the different child clubs and children organization facilitated by Save the Children Sweden Denmark’s partner organization. Ichchey was formed by the children in 2003. The main objectives of these children is to create space to express children’s views, opinions and sufferings of all children and disseminate it through the media to create awareness among policy makers and civil society members about children’s situation and to make them accountable.

All the decisions are made by the children in regard to the organization and its activities. One adult helps them to get the information, provide legal support if needed and facilitate the process to run the organisation smoothly. 4 children are nominated by each partner organization as a member of Ichchey. The nomination process is totally facilitated by the children. Fifty per cent of the nominated children have to be girls and fifty per cent are boys. All the nominated children from the different clubs will be the general members of Ichchey. 16 members form the  working group, this working group is formed by the general members.This working group runs the activities involving all others members.

Children from different socio economic background can be the members of Ichchey. At present 80 children are directly working with Ichchey as members and almost 200 children are indirectly related with Ichchey’s activities.

Major activities:

Video film on children issues:

Produce video film on different children issues and violence against children. Ichchey arranges film shows in their own community regularly and invites local leaders, teachers, police and parents. Ichchey also initiates dialogues with the audiences on the issues addressed in the film show.

Children’s newspaper:

Publish a monthly newspaper and disseminate news related to children’s lives. They prefer the news that is not addressed by the mainstream news media. Children from different area are sending their own news, drawings, poems, songs, etc. regularly.

Children’s theatre:

Ichchey arranges theatre performance at community level and theatre festival at national level for advocating on stopping violence against children.

Monitoring violence against children:

Monitoring violence against children is another activity implemented by the children. Children collect the news on violence against children from the daily newspaper and produce a report on it. The report is shared with the policy makers at the different meetings, seminars and workshops.

Dialogue on children issues:

Children organize different meetings with journalists and lawyers time to time and share the situation of children at their own community. 

Children’s web page;

Ichchey has developed its own web page to inform about its activities as well as to disseminate its news among the civil society.      

Working area:  Ichchey is working in Dhaka and Chittagong cities in Bangladesh. Children formed two children working team at Dhaka and Chittagong.

Coverage: Altogether 150 children from different background are directly working with Ichchey Media Group and almost 3,000 children are indirectly involved with the activities implemented by Ichchey.  Children are now able to produce documentary video film on different children’s issues, arrange dialogue with the policy makers, publish children’s newspaper, produce theatre to negotiate with the community leaders.

Bhorer Alo 

A group of children formed a children organization in 2005 to learn from non formal education system. Children learn from other children through theatre and different education materials published by the organisation who are working on education. They are running a school regularly in Dhaka city.

Major activities:

•    Non formal education for slum children
•    Training on CRC
•    Theatre for development
