Emergency Preparedness and Management

Save the Children Sweden Denmark perceives emergency as a situation of hardship and human suffering arising from different events which cause physical loss or damage, social and/or economic disruption with which the country or community concerned is unable to fully cope alone. It may result from natural cause (e.g. cyclone, flood) or man made cause (e.g. civil unrest).

The geographic location, dense population and a persistently weak socio-economic structure make people in Bangladesh extremely vulnerable to disasters. Severe cyclones with tidal surge occur in the coastal region recurrently. Nearly all parts of the country frequently experience floods.

Children often make up more than half the population affected by disasters. Their wellbeing depends on the security of family relationships and a stable environment. Crises may often separate children from their family and community, or leave families unable to provide for and protect their children. Children are especially vulnerable because they are less able to protect themselves and young children, in particular, are susceptible to hunger and disease.

Save the Children Sweden Denmark works to see children’s rights are prioritized and safe guarded in emergency responses and also communities are taking preventive and curative measures to address child rights violations during emergencies in Bangladesh.

The emergency theme works on building capacity of all existing Save the Children Sweden Denmark thematic partners, alliance and network members to address the above issue. It also ensures children’s active participation in the emergency management cycle through community based child protection committee.
