Chittagong Hill Tract in south-eastern Bangladesh is made up of 3 districts with at total population of 1, 5 million people. 50% belong to different indigenous groups and speak 13 local languages.
About 55% of children aged 6-10 years are not enrolled in schools and the dropout rate is 60% which is due to poor teaching quality, language barriers and long distance to schools. Only 28% of the girls complete their primary education.
By training teachers to teach in different languages and organize awareness and advocacy training – Save the Children with IKEA Social Initative, will improve the quality of education for 29,820 primary school children. This means children will be taught in their mother tongue, text books will be printed and distributed in 3 languages and children will get the chance to express their views in decision making.
