The paper begins with a short outline of the rationale for this including boys and men to address gender inequalities. Then, the bulk of the document examines the practical issues involved in mainstreaming boys and men in Save the Children Sweden (SCS) programming and focuses in particular on strategies for involving, educating and mobilising boys and men.

This workshop focused on the root causes of violence, particularly those related to the process of construction of gender roles and gender socialization and masculinity. It also focused on the importance of applying a child rights perspective when working with boys and men, putting children at the centre and recognizing them as rights holders and social actors. The workshop also provided an opportunity for interchange of ideas, expertise and experiences of Save the Children and their partner organizations on working with boys and men. The participants developed strategies and action plans to incorporate boys and men’s involvement.

This is a documentation of a campaign to end violence against women and girls and to promote gender equality in India. Men’s Action for Stopping Violence Against Women or MASVAW is a network of over 175 individuals and 100 organisations, a member based campaign in the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. These men have decided to bring about a change within themselves and in other men to raise their voice against traditional patriarchal values and challenge stereotypical notions of what it means to be a man.

Development professionals from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sweden were capacitated to equipmen and boys to become more caring, attentive and gender sensitive fathers and husbands, in turn helping themselves, their families and the society at large. The mapping of tools aims to build capacity of organisations working with boys and men to end violence against girls, boys, women and other men and to promote gender equality. The tools have been complied, so as to enable practitioners to add value to their current interventions by adapting them to their context. The mapping also attempts to create linkages between the growing community of people and organisations working with boys and men to end violence.

It reviews existing policies, schemes and programmes run by State Parties in Bangladesh and India which support families and parenting efforts. It outlines a number of recommendations to improve government’s support to parenting. The paper also examines existing parenting and child development programmes to see if they are address gender discrimination and stereotyping, the role of fathers, masculinities, disabilities, violence etc.
