Regional Meeting of Development Agencies Working against Child Sexual Abuse, Neha Bhandari, Save the Children, 2005

This was the first time development professionals, medical professionals and psychologists working against child sexual abuse came together at the regional level in South Asia. The report captures strategies, methodologies, good practices, tools and challenges to end child sexual abuse, that were highlighted at the workshop. The report also presents recommendations to end child sexual abuse, which involves strengthening laws, policy and programmes, working in partnerships with men and boys, including girls and boys from various backgrounds, and forming community-based and child-centred psychosocial, legal and health structures and mechanisms.

Mapping Save the Children’s Response to Violence against Children in South Asia Region, Fahmida Jabeen and Ravi Karkara, Save the Children Sweden, 2005

The mapping provides an analysis of the level and nature of violence against girls and boys in the South Asian region. It provides an overview of the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) that pertain to violence against children and to children’s participation. It also examines the lacunae in the framework of existing national laws with respect to this issue. Summary details of some Save the Children-supported initiatives, projects and research that aim to reduce violence against children in South Asia have been provided. It also pulls together a catalogue of challenges to eliminate violence against children and makes recommendations to overcome them. 

Voices and Action of Girls and Boys to end Violence against Children in South and Central Asia, Neha Bhandari with Shoma Jabeen and Manoj Karki, Save the Children Sweden, 2005

Actions and VoicesThe discussion paper analyses South and Central Asia's children's expressions, views, concerns and priorities on violence against girls and boys in various settings. The paper is divided into five kinds of violence: physical and degrading/humiliating punishments, child sexual abuse, commercial and sexual exploitation (including child trafficking) of boys and girls, gender-based violence and children in conflict with law. The document gives a regional perspective while showcasing children’s actions and recommendations on violence against children.

Mapping of Psychosocial Support for Girls and Boys, Cath Slugget, Save the Children Sweden, 2003

The mapping is a compilation of information on organisations working with community-based approaches to combat child sexual abuse. The document assesses the level of psychosocial support provided, including structures and mechanisms. The paper also maps sexual health education projects which relate to children affected by child sexual abuse.

This briefing paper was commissioned in order to contribute to the discussions and preparations for the UN Study on Violence Against Children. This document makes an organisational commitment to challenge all types of violence, while recognising that gender differences and stereotypes can lead to negative attitudes which can ultimately lead to violence.

 

Children’s Actions to end violence against Children – a film by Save the Children for the UN Study on Violence against Children. 2006 (VCD and DVD; 4 mins. (short version) and 12 mins. (longer version)

The film is about children and young people’s actions to end violence against girls and boys. It shows how girls and boys all over the world are organising themselves to take action against violence, in diverse and innovative ways. The film is made from existing footage available with various Save the Children offices around the world. The film was edited in Nepal. Some of the footage in this film has been shot by children and young people. The film has also been shown to children and young people. Their views have been incorporated in the film.

Children’s participation is crucial in addressing violence affecting them. This film brings together experiences of children who are taking action, to overcome challenges in their individual lives, in schools and in their communities. It calls upon the adult community to involve children, listen to them and take their views seriously.

This film intends to bring forward the affect of violence on children and their development. It highlights the importance of partnerships with governments, families, communities in reconsidering children as equal actors in the fight against violence. The film emphasises the root causes of violence against children.
